BMW 330i Cranks But Won’t Start — From Diagnostic Job To My Own Car
What started as a BMW 330i crank-no-start diagnosis ended with me getting the car running, falling for the car myself, and eventually buying it.
The Problem
This 2005 BMW 330i came to me with a simple but frustrating problem: it would crank over, but it wouldn’t start.
The starter was turning the engine over, so this wasn’t simply a case of a dead battery or a starter motor that wasn’t operating. The job was to find out why the engine was cranking but not actually starting.
As with any crank-no-start fault, the important thing is not to start throwing parts at the car. You need to establish what the car is actually doing and work through the systems that are required for the engine to run.
Starting With The Basics
The first part of the investigation was checking the starting and engine management systems and establishing what was happening during cranking.
The car already had an immobiliser-related modification, so the EWS system and starting circuit also needed to be considered during the diagnosis.
Testing showed that the starter circuit could be made to operate when the relevant circuit was bypassed. That was useful information, but it wasn’t enough on its own to say that the original fault had been identified.
This is one of the important parts of electrical diagnosis: getting one part of a circuit to operate doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve found the reason the vehicle won’t start.
Working Through The Fault
With the engine cranking, the investigation moved towards the systems that the BMW needs in order to actually run.
Depending on the vehicle and the symptoms, a crank-no-start diagnosis can involve checking ECU power supplies, grounds, immobiliser authorisation, engine speed information, fuel supply, injector operation, ignition and communication between the relevant control modules.
The important part is to test rather than assume.
On a car like this, it’s very easy to spend money replacing parts because a particular system looks suspicious. Proper testing gives you evidence of what is actually happening.
Getting The 330i Running
After working through the fault and carrying out the necessary diagnosis, the BMW was eventually running properly again.
And that’s where this particular job took an unexpected turn.
Then I Ended Up Buying It
Once the car was running, I actually started to really like it.
It’s a car I’ve now had the chance to work on, diagnose and drive, rather than just another vehicle that comes and goes through the business.
The owner later decided they wanted to sell the car to raise some cash. I already knew the car, knew the work I’d carried out on it, and I’d started to enjoy it.
So I bought it.
What started as a BMW diagnostic job has now ended with the 330i becoming my own car.
From Diagnostic Job To My Own BMW
It’s actually a pretty good example of why I enjoy the work I do. Every vehicle comes with its own problems, and sometimes a job turns into something you didn’t expect at all.
This one went from a BMW that wouldn’t start, to a car that is now running properly and sitting on my own driveway.
And because it’s now mine, this probably won’t be the last time the 330i appears in the Nightfall Journal.
More work, diagnostics and updates on the 330i to come.
